Andrey Esipenko

The very young Andrey Esipenko has earned the right to participate in the Magistral after winning the tournament for young talents “Magistral de León” which in 2020 was played online.

In 2011, he won the Candidates Tournament in Kazan to challenge the Indian Viswanathan Anand for the title of world champion. That match took place in Moscow in May 2012, where Anand retained his title of World Chess Champion.

Andrey Evgenyevich Esipenko (born March 22, 2002) is a Russian chess grandmaster. He won the U10 European Chess Championship in 2012, and the U16 European Chess Championship and was the U16 World Champion in 2017. He secured all his grandmaster norms at the end of 2017 and received the FIDE title in April 2018.

He is the third in the FIDE world ranking of the best Junior players. In the July list of the FIDE classification, he appears with an Elo of 2682. At 18 years old he is the main favorite of this Master of Young Talents. In January 2021 in the prestigious TATA STEEL tournament in Holland he defeated the world champion Magnus Carlsen.
