GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Francia)

2009 World Junior Champion, three times French Champion (2007, 2011 and 2012), always in the top 15 since 2013. One of the youngest ever GMs (at 14 years and 4 months, in 2005), he is now 24, and a very tough opponent for everyone, including the World Champion Magnus Carlsen (the two games between them in 2014 were drawn).

He will play in Leon for the first time, and is the clear favorite.

• He started to compete at the age of six years. Winning the French U-8s in 1997, U-10s in 1999, U-12s in 2000, U-16s in 2002, runner up in the U-18s in 2003 and won the U-20s in 2004.

• World Youth Championships: third in the U-10s in 2000, third in the U-12s in 2001, second in U-14s in 2003 and third in U-16s in 2005. World Junior Champion U-20 in 2009.

• Winner of 2009 Biel tournament, ahead of Morozevich and Ivanchuk.

• Winner of 2012 SPICE Cup at Webster University (USA), ahead of Le Quang Liem, Ding, So, Meier, and Balogh.

•Semi-finalist at the Chess World Cup 2013.

•Second at the Bilbao Masters Final 2013.

• Winner of Biel (Switzerland) 2014 ahead of Giri and the World female Champion Yifan Hou.

•Winner of the Spanish Team Championship (Division de Honor) with Sestao Naturgas in 2012 and 2013.
